A fitness coach/author that I respect wrote in his forum that someone wanted to fight him because he said “It depends…” so much. I thought about that for a while. “It depends…” could be someone who was ducking the question, either because they were unable to answer it or just didn’t want to take the time to do so.
Or, and I feel it applies to this author, it means something else entirely. It means they may have a wealth of experience and knowledge to know that while there are well established principles in various fields of endeavors, that there are always exceptions and nuances. It also could mean that more information is required from the questioner, in order to get the right answer, and the “It depends…” is a precursor to those questions. It may even go further, in that the questioner might need to ask a different question entirely to get what the information they actually want, and a discussion needs to happen to determine what that is.
Yes, there are general guidelines and simple rules that one can follow in order to lead a better life or solve a problem. However, things are typically much more complex than they initially appear. In the case of a “better life”, that had very individual meaning, so time must be taken to discuss what is actually meant.
